it's amazing how many wonderful examples of new/old building interface is hidden in south africa... i came accross the Cape Quarter shopping and lifestyle centre this weekend while i was in cape town. its situated on Somerset Road in Green Point and the sensitivity of which the new building was intergrated with the old is wonderful. the old facade and trusses are enclosed with glass to accentuate their beauty in relation to the very modern new elements. Some of the brickwork of old was exposed in the 'spar tops' area and was made to be a wonderfully lit glazed wine display. this preservation of old was not in any way forced and compliments must be given to the architects that designed this approach. The heritage has in no way limited the manner in which the building was able to expand into a very successful new shopping centre complex that relates to the new design orientated consumer:) i really like it. here are some pics to try and capture what i saw in this wonderful building... happy blogging bloggers x

i love the solution to old/new interface achieved with the facade - the outline of the existing facade seen at the interior makes a very strong statement...you are so lucky to have been there in real life!
